Unprecedented Meaning - YouTube

Have you found yourself using certain words and phrases during these trying times of 2020? Have you said, “unprecedented”, “I’ve been 2020ed”, “social distancing”, or “Zoom” an unprecedented amount of times? I certainly have! However, lately, more than anything, I have heard myself say, “Let’s take it one day at a time”.

When asked what I am doing over fall break, Thanksgiving, or Christmas, I usually say I will have to take it one day at a time because we will have to see how things play out. One day at a time! That reminds me of the hymn, Day by Day written by Lina Sandell in 1865, after she and her pastor father were passengers in a boat crossing Lake Vattern in Sweden. The boat lurched forward and her father fell overboard and drowned while Lina watched in horror.

Many times, when tragedy strikes, people allow themselves to be destroyed by the horrific trial. However, in other cases, a person’s faith carries them through the tragedy. Lina’s faith saw her through and enabled her to pen a hymn of quiet assurance.

The hymn, Day by Day, speaks of finding strength to face trials, having no cause for worry or for fear. The encouragement of the lyrics is to ask for God’s help in times of tribulation and to trust God’s promises of mercy for each hour “till I reach the promised land”. The song provides comfort to people in distress, which is where most of us are at some time or another, especially during 2020. We need to lean on, and rest in, the assurance that God is with us, He will help us, and He loves us, even when we are living in “unprecedented” times and are being 2020ed on a regular basis!
