The Perfect Father
June 21, 2020I have gotten a lot of mileage out of this card which I first gave to my dad on Father’s Day, 2015. It has become my “go to” and recycled card ever since then, and especially this year, as getting out to a store to buy cards is not as easy as the days prior to COVID-19.
However, giving my Dad a fresh, new card has become less important in recent years as honoring my dad has taken on a different significance as he ages and as I spend more time in his company (and my mom’s) and take care of him in as many ways as I can. While, I have written my share of tributes to my dad, whether it be on Father’s Day or on his birthday, and recently on his 95th milestone birthday, I find myself pondering about Father’s Day, June 21, 2020 very differently. Perhaps it is the many Facebook tributes I saw today about fathers who have gone to glory and are missed so greatly!
As I read each tribute, I realized, in a more poignant way than ever before, just how difficult Father’s Day can be for so many. Many have lost their fathers, but the pain of that loss is somewhat relieved by having husbands who are great fathers to their children. Others have lost their fathers and that pain is not diminished, because they are single, and do not have husbands to be a potential father. Some have absent fathers for far too many reasons to mention here.
And then I have a Dad who is beyond wonderful, and I have been blessed with his presence for all my life so far! And while I am thankful for my good fortune, my heart is heavy for those who are struggling today and I am thinking that ALL of us can have a FATHER who always was and will always be and I would like to share His wonderful attributes, 21 of them in fact, on this 21st day of June which is Father’s Day.
