“God Colors Within The Lines”
September 9, 2022
Most of us have a “happy place” and for me it is the beach. The beach can even be a “happier place” when young children tag along because their perspective of, and play in the sand and water, is frequently unique. Once, while down the shore with some friends, one of the children was marveling about how the water, whether in low or high tide, stayed within a certain boundary. He said, “God is just like me when I color. I stay within the lines.” Out of the mouth of babes!
Even though I have often marveled at the limits of the sea, I had never thought of God’s ocean boundaries as similar to coloring within the lines. However, I appreciated the analogy this young child had, and it reminded me of a favorite verse within Proverbs 8.
29 …he assigned to the sea its limit,
so that the waters might not transgress his command,
One of the reasons I am so fascinated by the ocean is because God assigned the sea its limit. The sea cannot go beyond the limits that God has commanded.
Other verses in the Bible reference this also.
Job 38:10-11
And I placed boundaries on it
And set a bolt and doors,
And I said, ‘Thus far you shall come, but no farther;
And here shall your proud waves stop’?
Psalm 104:9
You set a boundary that they may not pass over,
So that they will not return to cover the earth.
Jeremiah 5:22
For I have placed the sand as a boundary for the sea,
An eternal decree, so it cannot cross over it.
Though the waves toss, yet they cannot prevail;
Though they roar, yet they cannot cross over it.
God should get a gold star for coloring within the lines. Better yet, He should be praised for being a wise Creator!
“Worthy are you, our Lord and God,
to receive glory and honor and power,
for you created all things,
and by your will they existed and were created.” – Revelation 4:11
