“I’m not lost. I’m temporarily misplaced.” (Pick a Card Series)
July 23, 2023When lost and in need of directions, women are expected to ask for help while men are not. Typically, women find it easier to ask for help with little regard to how they will be perceived if they ask. They simply want to get “unlost.” Many men, on the other hand, may not even admit they are lost, let alone ask for directions. They claim, “I’m not lost. I’m temporarily misplaced.”
Within the Book of Psalms lies a verse that is both a promise and an invitation that has provided solace, encouragement, and hope to countless individuals, regardless of gender. Psalm 32:8 reads,
I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go;
I will counsel you with my eye upon you.
This psalm is attributed to King David, and he begins by assuredly declaring, “[God]will instruct you.” This proclamation reminds us that we are not left to navigate the complexities of life on our own. As believers, we have access to divine wisdom and guidance. This divine instruction comes through various means, including God’s Word, personal prayer, meditation, and the counsel of fellow believers. When we turn to God with open hearts, willing to receive His teaching, we can experience His guiding hand leading us along the right path.
The verse continues, assuring us that God will “teach you in the way you should go.” This truth reminds us that God’s guidance is not a one-size-fits-all approach. He knows each of us intimately and understands our unique circumstances, strengths, and weaknesses. His teaching is tailored specifically to our needs, helping us discern the best course of action in every situation.
The psalmist further expresses God’s promise, “I will counsel you with my eye upon you.” This tender imagery highlights the intimate relationship God desires to have with His children. As our Heavenly Father, He looks upon us with love and compassion, never leaving us to face life’s challenges alone. This verse reminds us that God watches over us continually, offering wise counsel and guidance fueled by His unwavering love for us. We can take comfort in knowing that His eyes are always upon us, leading and protecting us with infinite care.
Psalm 32:8 offers not only the promise of guidance but also the reassurance of God’s unfailing presence. Embracing this promise requires humility, trust, and a willingness to surrender our own understanding. It requires admitting that we are more than misplaced, that at times we are lost. By seeking God’s instruction, allowing Him to teach us, and accepting His loving counsel, we position ourselves to experience His abundant blessings and divine intervention. As we rely on His guidance, we can face decisions, trials, and uncertainties with confidence, knowing that we are not alone in our journey.
