“All that you have done…”
May 12, 2024My attention was drawn to Ruth 2:11 on this Mother’s Day, the first for me without my dear Mom.
11 But Boaz answered her, “All that you have done for your mother-in-law since the death of your husband has been fully told to me. – Ruth 2:11
Boaz was praising Ruth for her loyalty and devotion to her mother-in-law Naomi after the death of Naomi’s husband and two sons. Boaz recognized and appreciated Ruth’s character and the sacrifices she had made, and the love and care she had shown towards Naomi. Indeed, Ruth made several sacrifices for Naomi, some of which included:
1. Leaving her own country and family to accompany Naomi to Bethlehem.
2. Providing for Naomi and herself by gleaning in the fields to gather leftover grain.
3. Observing and adopting the customs and traditions of Naomi’s people, including the Israelite faith.
4. Following Naomi’s instructions and seeking guidance from her on how to navigate their difficult situation.
These sacrifices demonstrated Ruth’s love, loyalty, and selflessness towards Naomi, and they ultimately led to her being rewarded and blessed by Boaz and the community in Bethlehem.
Ruth 2 may not be a common verse referenced on Mother’s Day, especially because the verse was more about what a daughter-in-law had done for her mother-in-law rather than the other way around. However, the sacrifices that Ruth made for her mother-in-law, and the verse, “All you have done …has been fully told to me,” reminds me of ALL my own dear Mother did for my brothers and me. And perhaps I may never be able to fully tell ALL, I can rejoice, reflect, and remember my Mom and her many sacrifices on this special day.
I rejoice by acknowledging her love, kindness, affection, and sacrifices for our family. I reflect on the values and lessons she imparted. I try to be mindful of “If you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say anything at all,” and “It doesn’t cost you anything to be nice.” I remember her every day and the many ways she cared for my brothers and me. I still have the first pair of shoes I ever wore, and they bear evidence of how she polished them meticulously. I cannot use spell-check without remembering how good she was at spelling and producing the best sentences for spelling words. I rarely go into my kitchen without remembering how she faithfully prepared meals for our family for decades.
I will be forever grateful that God allowed me to have the best Mom a daughter could ever wish to have. Thank you, Mom, for ALL you have done of which I am FULLY aware. Today was a little difficult without you here, but rejoicing, reflecting, and remembering your life and legacy comforted my heart!
P.S. I miss watching the Phillies with you, but in keeping with our tradition, I haven’t missed a game yet. They’re doing amazing things so far!
