“Search for It as for Hidden Treasures”
July 2, 2022The closest I have ever come to hunting for buried treasure, was a few years ago while visiting Israel. One day our tour group went to an archaeological dig and sifted through soil to recover small artifacts from early Biblical history. It was exciting to imagine unearthing a buried treasure that might have been a valuable metal or something that revealed greater insight into Jesus’ earthly ministry. While I am not sure we found anything that valuable, we were diligent in our digging for buried treasure.
That memory from my trip to Israel, is what comes to mind when I read Proverbs 2:4-6. God’s wisdom is a hidden treasure to be searched.
4 if you seek [wisdom] like silver and search for it as for hidden treasures, 5 then you will understand the fear of the LORD and find the knowledge of God. 6 For the Lord gives wisdom;
We all need wisdom for various decisions in life and especially to know God better. On Father’s Day, I began a series of blogs on the Book of Proverbs by writing on Proverbs 1, where Solomon spoke to his sons to listen to his instruction. In turn, I wrote my Dad’s wisdom and frequent reminder to listen to his words of wisdom. Little did I know, when preparing to write on Proverbs 2, that my focus would shift from listening to my Dad’s wisdom to praying for wisdom concerning him. The day after Father’s Day, my 97 year old Dad, fell and broke his hip. Thankfully he was cleared for surgery to repair his hip, and he survived the surgery. Five days after his surgery, Dad was moved to a rehab facility where he has been receiving three hours of acute therapy daily, toward the goal of restoring his functionality to what it was before his fall. He has to learn daunting tasks like walking, and simple to most of us kinds of tasks, like putting on his socks.
Many decisions were made from the time of Dad’s fall, through surgery, and then rehab. Many are the decisions that are still ahead of us as Dad hopefully gets closer to returning home. And so we seek wisdom from above that we may make the wisest choices moving forward as those choices will not only impact Dad, but Mom as well. We are ready to dig deeply for the treasure of wisdom, to learn more about the Lord through this time, and we thank God “6 For the Lord gives wisdom”!
