Sum…sum…summertime!
July 5, 2013School is out for a few weeks and that means the books are closed, right? Right, except for the all the books we plan to read on the beach, on vacation, on the plane…While summer may mean school is out of session, it also means the summer reading list is OUT. In every book store I’ve been in lately, I’ve hovered over the required summer reading tables, comparing the books kids have to read now with books I’ve read and comparing what I might recommend versus what teachers recommend.
To continue the “bookish” theme for our blog, we decided to offer our own “Summer Reading List”. While we won’t be blogging on or about these particular titles, we just wanted to share a few books we’ve read that you might want to pick up for your summertime reading.
If you want to read what the “kids” are reading – try a YA book:
The Book Thief – Marcus Zusak
Uglies – Scott Westerfield (this is my daughter’s summer requirement)
Unwind – Neil Shusterman
Code Name Verity – Elizabeth Wein
Ivan the One and Only-Katherine Applegate (Newberry Medal Winner 2013)
If you like a “real life” story – try one of these biography/memoirs:
(Note – this is Cammy’s favorite genre)
No Biking in the House without a Helmet – Melissa Fay Greene
Unbroken – Laura Hillenbrand
Kisses for Katie – Katie Davis
Left to Tell – Immaculata Ilibagazia
Girl Meets God – Lauren Winner
Home is a Roof Over a Pig – Aminta Arrington
Same Kind of Different as Me – Ron Hall
If you are a serious reader who “yearns to learn”, expand your brain with:
Quiet – Susan Cain
The Power of Habit – Charles Duhigg
The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks – Rebecca Skloot
Why Jesus – Ravi Zacharias
Think – John Piper
If you are looking for light easy reading poolside, we suggest you try some fiction by Lynn Austin or Jan Karon. They have several series that will get you right through to Labor Day.
If you are thinking, “Hey! Wait a minute, summertime is my best time to study a book of the Bible. What about me?” Well, we have something for you, too. Tim Keller just released an excellent study on the book of Galatians called, “Galatians for You”. I am working through it right now and it is excellent, accessible with short chapters perfect for morning devotions.
As always, we would encourage you to keep reading the The Book, too. Because words matter, and God’s Word matters most. (Cammy)
