“What does a talking donkey and a Dove candy wrapper have in common?”
May 25, 2024I have never purchased a first-class ticket for a flight in over 40 years of air travel. I have been upgraded, bumped, or moved to first class, but never on my dime. That is, until recently. A little over a month ago I was booking a flight whose price was “pricey” for an economy seat. And then I noticed that an elite ticket was only a couple of hundred dollars more expensive, and that enticed me. So I placed what concerned me as an indulgent ticket on hold for 24 hours and prayed about what I should do.
Twenty-three hours later, I was notified that I either needed to pull the trigger on the topflight ticket or lose it. As I stared at the computer screen, still praying for God’s guidance, I still doubted the purchase. Yes, it would give me more leg room, comfortable seating, premium Wi-Fi, tasty food…but would it be mollycoddling to purchase it? So I kept staring at the computer screen while indulging on three small pieces of dark chocolate Dove candy. When I read the candy wrapper on the first piece of candy, I read the quote, “Book the flight”. I had to laugh out loud, and then laughed out loud two more times when I unwrapped the remaining two pieces of candy and found the same phrase on each wrapper, “Book the flight”.
Please know that I never seek answers to my prayers by consulting the messages written on a Dove candy wrapper. However, it did get me to thinking about how God can choose to use unusual things to provide guidance or to accomplish His purposes. At times, God uses unusual things to communicate, such as,
1. A burning bush that speaks to Moses (Exodus 3:2)
2. A prophet named Balaam’s donkey that speaks to him (Numbers 22:28)
3. A hand appearing and writing on a wall during King Belshazzar’s feast (Daniel 5:5)
4. A fish swallowing Jonah and keeping him alive for three days (Jonah 1:17)
5. A talking serpent that tempted Eve in the Garden of Eden (Genesis 3:1)
If God can use a talking donkey in someone’s life, He can also use a Dove candy wrapper. By the way, over the next few weeks as I both shared and ate the remainder of the Dove candy, the “Book the Flight” message never appeared again. And in case you’re wondering, I did splurge on the flight and it was heavenly in more ways than one!
