“Galentine’s Day – Celebration and Commitment”

Every year on February 13th, women across the world gather to celebrate Galentine’s Day—a holiday dedicated entirely to friendship. While Valentine’s Day often focuses on romantic relationships, Galentine’s Day shifts the spotlight to the deep, meaningful bonds of friendship. It’s about recognizing that love isn’t limited to romance—friendship is a powerful form of love, too.

Proverbs 17:17 – “A friend loves at all times, and a brother is born for a time of adversity.”

Proverbs 17:17 reminds us that true friendship isn’t only about shared joy; it’s also about steadfast love in the face of hardship. Real friendship is consistent, loyal, and present — especially when life is difficult.

When we combine these ideas, we see that God’s design for friendship includes both celebration and commitment. Friendship in God’s design is more than companionship — it’s covenant-like faithfulness.

A Friend Loves At All Times

The verse doesn’t say a friend loves when it’s easy. It says at all times.

That means:

  • In seasons of joy and celebration
  • In moments of failure and embarrassment
  • During misunderstandings
  • Through distance and silence
  • When you cancel plans
  • When you’re moody
  • When you’re wrong
  • In grief, stress, and uncertainty

Biblical friendship isn’t based on convenience. It’s rooted in covenant-like loyalty. It says, “I’m not going anywhere.”

A Brother Is Born for Adversity

The second half of the verse shifts the focus to family — but not just in the biological sense. The Hebrew understanding of “brother” also carries the idea of close kinship and covenant relationship.

“Born for adversity” suggests purpose. Adversity is not an interruption of relationships; it is often the proving ground of them.

When hardship hits:

  • Illness
  • Financial strain
  • Loss
  • Crisis
  • Spiritual battles

A “brother” — whether by blood or by bond — stands firm when storms come. They show up not just with words, but with presence.

A Reflection of Divine Love

Many believers see in this proverb a glimpse of God’s own character. Throughout Scripture, God presents Himself as the faithful friend—the One who loves at all times. The One who never abandons His people in adversity. The One who stays.

In that sense, Proverbs 17:17 doesn’t just describe ideal friendship. It reflects divine character. Divine love is not temporary. It does not retreat when we falter. It remains constant in every season.

Final Thoughts

In a world where relationships can sometimes feel temporary, conditional, or convenience-based, Proverbs 17:17 offers a powerful reminder of what true friendship and family are meant to look like.

A friend loves at all times.
A brother stands in adversity.

A true friend doesn’t just show up for brunch — she shows up for battle.
