Netflix, Hulu, and Psalm 1

Psalm 1 begins with counsel:

“Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the wicked…” (Psalm 1:1)

That makes me wonder: Whose counsel am I listening to? Even though most of us would never say we actively seek out wicked counsel, bad advice rarely introduces itself as such. It arrives quietly through streaming platforms like Netflix and Hulu, and social media, echoing through the voices we continuously invite into our personal lives. Little by little, the world tells us what matters, what happiness looks like, what we deserve, what we should fear, and what we cannot live without. But Psalm 1:2 points us somewhere else:

“His delight is in the law of the LORD, and on his law he meditates day and night.”

Among the many voices competing for my attention, God’s Word must be the loudest. When it is, a life rooted in Him becomes like a tree planted by streams of water—bearing fruit in its season, keeping its leaves green, and prospering. In short, it thrives. That word carries a profound weight for me now. When my mother passed away at almost 97 years old, her death certificate carried three words I’ll never forget: “Failure to thrive.” She didn’t have a terminal illness; her doctor simply said she ran out of gas. Still, there is something heartbreaking about those words. Her body just couldn’t sustain life anymore. But when I read Psalm 1:3, I can’t help but think about the spiritual opposite. The truth is, God wants His children to thrive:

He is like a tree planted by streams of water that yields its fruit in its season, and its leaf does not wither. In all that he does, he prospers.

God does not measure thriving by an easy life, a large bank account, a healthy body, or the absence of trouble. Instead, Psalm 1 describes a different kind of flourishing: roots that stay nourished, lives that bear fruit, and faith that endures through every season.

Psalm 1presents us with a choice: we can continually absorb the world’s counsel, or we can plant ourselves beside the life-giving truth of God’s Word. One leaves the soul thirsty; the other teaches us how to thrive.

Lord, with so many voices competing for my attention, help me recognize which ones are shaping me. Plant me beside Your truth. And even in seasons when I cannot see the fruit, help me trust what You are doing beneath the soil. I want more than to survive. I want to thrive in You.
