He Holds the Oceans and My Tomorrow

I love standing at the ocean’s edge. Something is mesmerizing about watching the waves roll toward the shore, one after another. Sometimes they are gentle; other times they are powerful enough to force me back a few paces. And yet, for all that power, the ocean has boundaries.

I’ve stood on the beach countless times without thinking much about the fact that the same God who created those waters also set their limits. And Psalm 33:6 reminds me just how extraordinary that is:

“By the word of the LORD the heavens were made, and by the breath of his mouth all their host.”

God spoke and creation obeyed. At His command, the sun, moon, stars, galaxies, and the boundless reaches between them all came into being. God didn’t need construction equipment, building materials, or a team of engineers. He didn’t need to draw up blueprints or figure out how everything would fit together.

And then David draws our attention to the oceans in verse 7:

“He gathers the waters of the sea as a heap; he puts the deeps in storehouses.”

I love that imagery. The vast oceans, with their enormous depths and relentless waves, are completely under God’s authority, as are their boundaries. Job 38:11 describes God declaring to the sea, “Thus far shall you come, and no farther.” The God who spoke the world into existence also established boundaries for the mighty oceans.

What a picture! The vast oceans, with their enormous depths and relentless waves, are entirely under God’s authority. The waters that seem so uncontrollable to us are never beyond His control.

And that makes me think about the “waves” I struggle to contain in my own life. Sometimes, tomorrow’s uncertainties loom as vast as the ocean before me. I can’t see what’s beyond the horizon, and I certainly can’t control what’s coming. But the God who holds the oceans doesn’t struggle to hold my tomorrow. The God who commands the oceans is not overwhelmed by the waves in my life.

He knows their depth. He knows their power. And He knows what I cannot see beneath the surface. That doesn’t mean He promises that every wave will stop before it reaches me. Storms still come. Shorelines change. Life can be frightening and unpredictable.

But the Creator is never at the mercy of His creation.

David’s response to all of this in verse 8 is not merely admiration, but worship:

“Let all the earth fear the LORD; let all the inhabitants of the world stand in awe of him!”

The next time I stand at the ocean’s edge, I want to spend less time staring at the waves and more time standing in awe of their Creator. And I want to remember that the waves may be powerful, but the One who commands them is greater still.

What waves in your life seem overwhelming right now? How might remembering the Creator’s power change the way you face them?
