My neighbor has placed a bird feeder, which she keeps well-stocked, in a tree that is located in a common area of the neighborhood. It’s a lovely scene, and every time I watch these birds, I am reminded of Psalm 91.
Finding Refuge: Sheltered Under His Wings
Life is often stormy. The headlines shout of anxieties, our personal lives present unexpected challenges, and it’s easy to feel vulnerable, exposed to the elements of a chaotic world. When those moments arise, where do you turn for true, unwavering safety?
Psalm 91 offers a timeless and beautiful answer – the refuge found under the protective wings of the Almighty. This psalm doesn’t promise a life free from storms, but it assures us of a shelter within them for those who choose to trust in God.
A Promise of Presence, Not a Shield from All Pain
The psalmist declares, “Whoever dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty”. To “dwell” means consistently choosing to be in His presence. When we live in that place of trust, we are covered by His “feathers,” finding “refuge under his wings”.
Think of a mother bird who instinctively protects her young when a storm or predator approaches. She gathers them physically under her wings, offering immediate, tangible protection. This is the intimate, personal care the scripture describes. God’s protection is an intimate embrace.
Trading Anxiety for Assurance
Psalm 91 is a potent antidote to anxiety. It replaces fear with faith by detailing the specific dangers from which we are spared: the “terror of night,” and the “arrow that flies by day”. While these were literal threats in ancient times, they resonate with our modern fears: the late-night worries that steal sleep, the crises that disrupt our days, the pervasive anxieties of a world often in disarray.
The psalm assures us that we will “not fear” these things because the Lord is our “refuge and our fortress”. This is not a guarantee of immunity to all hardship, but a powerful promise that in the midst of it all, we are never separated from His loving and sovereign care.
Making the Shelter Your Home
Trust is the key that unlocks the door to this secure dwelling. It’s an active choice to place our hope and confidence in Him as our refuge and fortress, rather than in our own limited strength.
When you feel the winds of uncertainty blowing, remember Psalm 91 offers profound comfort and security, assuring believers they are never alone or abandoned in suffering. God’s powerful presence ensures their ultimate good, even when facing life’s inevitable dangers and sorrows.
His wings are open. Will you rest under them today?
