Last week, we looked at the power of one word. With the word “Daughter”, Jesus restored status and hope to one who had been cast aside and was hopeless. Today, we will try and grasp the power and magnitude of two words. These two words are simple and yet, we find what they command us to do almost impossible.
When we left the scene in Luke 8, the woman who grasped the robe of Jesus had been immediately healed. But the story started with a man – Jarius, who was an important…

We write a lot about words and their meanings. It seems fitting since this blog and ministry is entitled “Words of Worth”. Today and next week, I want to look at the power of a couple of words Jesus used during His ministry. The story takes place in the gospel of Luke – Chapter 8, verses 41-56.
First on the scene, an important synagogue official named Jarius. Perhaps his social and religious status allowed him to push through to Jesus; it would be immediately evident this man was important. Yet, his…

My life could be described a lot of different ways but “exciting” would probably NOT make the list. So far today, I’ve gotten a child off to school, changed the sheets on the bed and run a couple of loads of laundry. Later, I’m going to the grocery store because like poor old Mother Hubbard, my cupboards are bare! Exciting? Not so much. For now, my days are spent mostly at home tending to home type things and I am mostly very content with that. So as we look at…

Catchphrases – we all use them. It’s interesting to me how certain terms or descriptions we casually throw around every day, sometimes include “words” that weren’t even words a few years. The most used phrase in my house and maybe one of the most dangerous? “Google it!”
With a touch, a swipe or a few keystrokes we can find answers to any question we have these days. In addition, there’s usually an instructional video attached. I watched a guy online install a new thermostat in his house yesterday in less than…

First a little recap: The word of the day is FOCUS. The goal is to get focused and maybe more importantly, stay focused on the things of the Lord. To be honest, my mind wandered more than once just typing that sentence and I had to resist an overwhelming urge to check my email even though I just looked at it five minutes ago! I’m so grateful God “remembers we are but dust”. (Psalm 103:14) But knowing how much I appreciate someone giving me some uninterrupted time and full attention,…

Last Sunday was the first day of December and the first Sunday of Advent. It appeals to the logical side of my brain for this to happen simultaneously. I was anticipating the lighting of the Advent candle at the morning church service and I was not disappointed. All five candles stood majestically near the altar and the reading that accompanied the lighting was from the book of Isaiah. How appropriate.
What I didn’t anticipate the next morning in my personal Advent devotional book was a Psalm about Solomon’s kingship and a…

Thanksgiving table talk always proves to be interesting at my family gatherings and yesterday was no exception! One conversation piece, in particular, was about Oxford Dictionaries’ 2013 Word of the Year. Each year a word is chosen, by the most esteemed guardian of the English language, which is “judged to reflect the ethos, mood, or preoccupations of that particular year and to have lasting potential as a word of cultural significance.” And this year the winner is, drum roll please……

A couple of years ago I posted a blog about the word “hitherto”. It’s hard to say how many times that particular (and rather archaic word) has come back to my mind.
This week I’ve been pondering another word. It may or may not be found in Scripture – I didn’t check – but God works according to this word all through His Word. The word? “Meanwhile…”
What brought this word to my mind and heart and then my journal was the culmination of studying Kings and Prophets with a Precepts group…

One thing I’ve done repeatedly though the years is move! If I counted correctly, over the past 26 years of marriage to my “honey-do”, we have lived in two duplexes, two apartments, one rental house, and six other houses – two of which we built and one that we renovated. Whew! Recently we relocated back to our beloved south after seven years spent above the Mason Dixon line in Pennsylvania. Here’s what I’ve noticed about how we get settled into a new place once we move….

In less than four months, I will be the mother of a teenager. That can only mean one thing – Braces! At this point, my daughter has teeth where there should be gaps and gaps where there should be teeth. Some teeth have decided to lodge in the wrong place entirely and some of them just didn’t even bother to show up! Not only will there be an orthodontist in her future but an oral surgeon as well. We will start down the long arduous and hopefully not too painful…
