Browsing Life is Good merchandise in stores is a fun way to enjoy the positive messages, soft apparel, and other products. You’ve probably seen the T-shirts, hats, mugs, stickers, and countless products carrying those three simple words. Sometimes the message is paired with a picture of a sunny day, a cup of coffee, a beach, a campfire, or some other reminder of life’s simple pleasures. If I designed a T-shirt, it would feature a sunny day, a cup of coffee, and a beach chair. What a fun and hopeful way to proclaim, “Life is good.”

However, while praying Psalm 16 today, I focused on verse two, which takes the proclamation of the good life much deeper:

“I say to the LORD, ‘You are my Lord; I have no good apart from you.’” —Psalm 16:2

David didn’t say, “Everything in my life is good.” He said,  “You are my Lord; I have no good apart from you.” That’s an important distinction because life can be beautiful, but it also can be difficult. Some days the coffee loses its magic, the vacation ends, plans shatter, and the changes we prayed for never come. If our declaration that life is good depends on everything around us going well, our joy will always be fragile.

David pointed to something more lasting. God Himself is our good. The beauty of the sunrise is good. Friendship is good. Laughter around a table is good. A long-awaited answer to prayer is good. But all those gifts are temporary. God is the Giver who remains when the gifts change.

That’s the deeper message we can carry with us. We don’t have to pretend every day is good. We don’t have to put on a cheerful T-shirt when our hearts are hurting. We can acknowledge disappointment, grief, uncertainty, and pain while still knowing God is good and He is with us.

So perhaps we could wear Life Is Good a little differently. Not as a declaration that everything is going our way, but as a reminder:

Life is good because God is good.
Life is good because God is our Lord.
Life is good because every good thing comes from Him.

And even on the days when life doesn’t feel good, we can still say, as David did: “You are my Lord; I have no good apart from you.”

Prayer

Lord, thank You for every good gift You place in my life. But more than the gifts, thank You for giving me Yourself. When life feels good, keep my heart grateful. When life feels difficult, keep my eyes on You. Help me remember that my deepest good isn’t found in my circumstances but in You. Amen.
