Under the Shadow of His Wings

When I was a child, it was comforting to know my mom or dad was watching out for me. Whether crossing a busy street, walking into an unfamiliar place, or facing something that frightened me, I didn’t need to understand everything that was happening. I just needed to know my parents, who loved me, were paying attention.

Perhaps that is why Psalm 17:8 feels so personal to me. David didn’t ask God to explain everything or promise that trouble will disappear. He asked God to keep him close:

“Keep me as the apple of your eye; hide me in the shadow of your wings.”

What a beautiful picture of God’s care!

The phrase “apple of your eye” refers to the pupil—the most sensitive and carefully protected part of the eye. David is asking God to guard him with that kind of attentiveness. He wants to be held close, protected from harm, and watched over by the One who sees everything.

Then comes the image of being hidden “in the shadow of your wings”. It paints a tender picture of a mother bird shielding her young beneath her wings. There is warmth, nearness, and refuge.

David doesn’t know what will happen next. But he knows where he wants to be.

Sometimes we long for God to remove every difficult circumstance. Yet Psalm 17:8 reminds us that God’s presence can be our refuge even when our circumstances remain unchanged. We may not know what tomorrow holds, but we can know Who holds us.

Perhaps today we need to make David’s words our own:

“Lord, keep me as the apple of your eye. Hide me in the shadow of your wings.”

We are not overlooked. We are not forgotten. The God who sees us also watches over us.

Prayer

Lord, thank You that I am never outside Your care. When I feel vulnerable, afraid, or uncertain, remind me that You see me and watch over me. Keep me close to You, and hide me in the shadow of Your wings. Help me rest in Your presence even when I cannot see what lies ahead. Amen.
